What does it take to get involved with Minor Hockey on a bench? Are you a first-time coach or trainer?

Essex Minor Hockey will reimburse applicants upon successful completion of the selected and required courses. Applicable to new coaches and trainers assigned to volunteer within the Essex Minor Hockey Association.

All qualifications listed are the MINIMUM REQUIREMENT

  • Coaches, Trainers and Managers must be 19 years of age or older.
   • Assistant Coaches must be 16 years of age or older.
   • All bench staff must be a minimum of 4 years older than the players they are coaching.
   • All Team Officials (Coach, Trainer, & Manager) require Respect in Sport (RiS) - Activity Leader or Speak Out! (RISP)
   • All Team Officials (Coach, Trainer, & Manager) require Gender Identity & Expression Course (GIEC)
   • All Team Officials must complete Rowan’s Law Resource Review & Acknowledgement
   • All qualifications must be registered in the Hockey Canada Registry (HCR)
   • All Bench staff and volunteers require a valid Police Vulnerable Sector or Police background check please fill out this form
     (Police_Clearance_Request_Letter_2024) prior to going to the OPP online link, and choose Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC)
   • All coaching Clinics listed below (register here)
   • Trainer course (register here)

  • The process for the Vulnerable Sector Checks (VSC) has been centralized and will be conducted by the Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) for all Team Officials and Team Personnel starting the 2024 - 2025 season. The OHF will process and update your Hockey Canada profile. This is no longer done by the local association.
  • If you have a valid VSC from 2024 or 2023, please upload it following the process
  • PLEASE FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTION FOR THE NEW PROCESS FOR VULNERABLE SECTOR CHECK.


If you have previously completed a prerequisite course, they will not need to be re-taken
